On this day three years ago, The Akron RubberDucks defeated the Reading Fightin’ Phils 14-4. As you might have guessed, this game was replete with stellar performances. The names alone in the top five spots of the RubberDuck lineup were noteworthy: CF Greg Allen, SS Yu Chang, C Francisco Mejia, 1B Bobby Bradley, and DH Eric Haase. Of the five, Mejia’s night was the most impressive: 2-4, 1 R, 4 RBI, 3 of them on a fourth-inning homer, his eleventh of the season. Haase was also impressive, scoring thrice, including on a second-inning solo shot. Chang drove in a pair of runs to increase his season total to 56. Bradley, astoundingly, went 0-for-5 with a hat trick (Imagine the score if his bat was hot!).
The Mallards of Main Street also got significant production from the eight and nine spots in the form of three-RBI games from RF Taylor Murphy and 3B Todd Hankins, each of whom hit a home run. The former’s fifth-inning round-tripper drove in two of his three (the other came on a bases loaded walk two frames later) while the latter drove in all three in one swing of his bat in the 4th. In an interesting, and painful, statistical note, Murphy also reached base twice via being hit by the pitched ball.
The pitching was highlighted by starter Shane Bieber doing Shane Bieber things. He allowed six hits in as many innings, but only let one of them score while striking out seven Fightins.
