It was another fun day in the Winter Leagues. A lot of players had stand-out performances. The IBI’s Daniel Sherriff takes you Around the Farm.
PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE (LBPRC)
Johnathan Rodriguez (RF, Atenienses de Manati) – 3-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 BB – Rodriguez really got it going on Thursday. He seemed primed for a big game when he led off the first with a double to give his team a runner in scoring position right off the bat.
Saul Rivera (RP, Indios de Mayaguez) – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 SO – The righty made his debut on Thursday. Rivera is in his third straight season with Indios de Mayaguez. The only thing that stood in his way from having a clean inning was a two-out walk to Ozzie Martinez.
Angel Lopez Alvarez (C, RA12) – 1-4 – The catcher’s lone hit of the game came fourth inning. It was a leadoff base hit but did no damage as he was erased on a force out at second base.
Joab Gonzalez (SS, RA12) – 2-4, 1 R, 1 SO – Gonzalez singled in the second inning to ignite a two-out rally. He came around to score a RBI-single by William Rivera. His other hit came with two outs in the ninth inning to give RA12 a chance at a rally but that went nowhere.
Jonathan Laureano (1B, RA12) – 0-4, 2 SO – Laureano had a tough time on Thursday. He had a chance to make something happen in the sixth inning with runners at first and second with out out but struck out swinging.
DOMINICAN LEAGUE (LIDOM)
Sandy León (C, Tigres del Licey) – 1-4 – León singled in the seventh inning to try and get a two-out rally going so Tigres del Licey could extend its lead but no dice.
Anthony Gose (RP, Toros del Este) – 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 SO – Gose entered in the sixth inning with a runner at second base and out out. He struggled with command as he surrendered a base hit then issued a walk to load the bases. Things didn’t get much better as he then surrendered a bases-loaded walk to Rodolfo Duran before finally regaining his control and striking out the next two batters.
Francisco Mejia (PH-C, Estrellas Orientales) – 1-1, 1 2B, 1 RBI – Mejia came off the bench to replace Rodolfo Duran at catcher in the seventh inning. He then delivered a RBI-double in the eighth inning to pad Estrellas Orientales’ lead.
Alexi Ogando (RP, Toros del Este) – 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R/1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO – Ogando had a rough outing. He gave up a one-out home run to Gabriel Guerrero and his defense let him down as a fielding error put the next runner at third base. Mejia then socked the RBI-double off him before he finally retired the next two batters.
MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE (LMP)
Jeff Johnson (RP, Sultanes de Monterrey) – 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 5 SO – The righty delivered two big innings out of the bullpen. Johnson combined with fellow reliever Fredy Quintero to post three scoreless innings of relief after Venados de Mazatlan squandered a three-run lead.
Brennan Bernardino (RP, Charros de Jalisco) – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 0 SO – Right after Charros de Jalisco mounted a two-run comeback to tie the game it was up to Bernardino to turn in a scoreless inning to send the game to extras. The southpaw did just that as he continues to be a solid option out of the bullpen.
Jose Guadalupe Chavez (SS, Tomateros de Culiacan) – 1-4 – Chavez picked up a base hit in the seventh inning and then swiped second base to get into scoring position but was stranded. His bat has begun to cool off in the last few games.
COLOMBIAN LEAGUE (LPB)
Dayan Frias (2B, Vaqueros de Monteria) – 0-3, 1 BB, 1 SO – The highlight of the game for Frias came in the eighth inning where he worked a walk to extend the frame. Vaqueros de Monteria had already four runs and the second baseman was doing his part to keep the line moving.
Audy Ciriaco (3B, Caimanes de Barranquilla) – 0-3, 1 BB – It was a quiet day at the plate for the third baseman.
Daniel Aguilar (LF, Gigantes de Barranquilla) – 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 SO – Aguilar singled to right field to drive home a run in the third inning and then came around to score himself on a RBI-single by Andy Vasquez as a part of a six-run frame.
