RubberDucks play through weather delays and multiple postponements this week en route to a 4-2 week against the Rumble Ponies
The Akron RubberDucks were “playing it by ear” this week as the ‘Ducks and Binghamton Rumble Ponies were scheduled to play seven games in six days. The extra game this week was inserted after a postponement in Akron earlier this season. However, the New York weather had other ideas for the schedule the teams were about to partake. Tuesday’s game went the scheduled nine innings with no issues, but Wednesday’s scheduled doubleheader was impacted by a mid-game weather delay, which forced the scheduled doubleheader to be pushed to Thursday evening. After Thursday’s games were completed, Friday’s game was washed, which forced a doubleheader to be played Saturday. The second game on Saturday went extra innings, going 11 frames instead of the scheduled seven. Ultimately, the final game of the series on Sunday was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up at a later date.
When it was all said and done, Akron took four of six games in the week, losing both ends of the Thursday doubleheader on walk-offs. At 16-7 overall, the RubberDucks are second in the AA-Northeast Southwest Division. They are 1.5 games behind the Bowie Baysox (17-5) and are tied with the Northeast Division leaders: the Somerset Patriots (16-7).

Player of the Week:
LHP Francisco Perez: 1-0, 4.0 IP, 8 Ks, 0 runs, 0 BBs
Perez entered game two against the Rumble Ponies this week in a tough spot – taking over for the starter Alex Royalty following a 2+ hour rain delay. He was up to the task however, throwing four scoreless innings in relief work in the 3-1 victory. Perez allowed just one hit and struck out eight Binghamton batters to secure the win. The southpaw has yet to allow an earned run this season in 15 innings of work. He leads all Tribe minor league organizations in ERA (0.00), BAA (.063), WHIP (0.60) and K/9 (15.6).
SS Tyler Freeman: 10-24 (.417), 7 runs, 3 RBIs, 2 2Bs, 2 SBs, 1 BB, .962 OPS
The man at the top of the order for the RubberDucks continues to rake at the plate this week and has the highest batting average at .370 this season. Freeman scored a team-high seven runs and recorded a hit in all six games this week, four of which were multi-hit nights. His 30 hits in 2021 leads all Indians minor league organizations.
3B Andruw Monasterio: 6-21 (.286), 7 RBIs, 4 2Bs, 3 BBs, 2 runs
Monasterio was one of four Ducks to appear in all six games this week and led the team with seven runs batted in. Four of his six hits went for extra bases. Five of the seven RBIs off the bat of Monasterio came with two outs in the inning. Monasterio reached base safely in all six games this week.
RHP Aaron Pinto: 1-0, 5.0 IP, 8 Ks, 0 runs, 1 BB
Pinto is another reliever who had a scoreless week. Pinto had a pair of outings against Binghamton, going 3.0 innings on 5/25 and 2.0 on 5/29. He struck out eight, allowed just two hits and one walk in his five innings of work. In 16.2 innings pitched this season, Pinto has an ERA of 1.08 with 21 K’s and a WHIP of 0.96.
RHP Eric Mock: First AA start, 3.2 IP, 7 Ks, 1 ER
Eric Mock made his RubberDucks debut on Thursday and although he didn’t go long, he made an impact to start his AA career. Mock sat down seven hitters of the 11 he retired, five of which came on swings and misses. Mock was saddled with a no decision after exiting the game with a 7-1 lead.
C Bo Naylor: 0-14 (.000), 1 BB, 10 Ks
Nothing really went right at the plate for the left-handed swinging Bo Naylor against Binghamton. Naylor went hitless in 15 plate appearances and reached just once via the walk. Naylor failed to put the ball in play on 10 occurrences and looks to turn things around next week at home versus Erie.
RHP Alec Wisely: 0-1, 3 appearances, 2.1 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 2 BBs, 4 Ks, 1 save
The first two outings of the season were not ideal for Wisely. The right-handed reliever surrendered five earned runs in 0.2 innings as the Ducks escaped with an 8-7 victory in the series opening game Tuesday. Wisely allowed one more run in 0.2 innings of work on Thursday evening, where he was saddled with the loss after failing to keep the game tied to get to extras. Wisely closed the week on a high note by working a 1-2-3 seventh inning on Saturday night to secure his first save of the season.
The RubberDucks return to Akron this week to take on the Erie Seawolves for the second time in 2021. From 5/11-16, the RubberDucks went 2-4 against the Tigers affiliates.
