With the likelihood we have no minor league ball in home stadiums this could this be the end of the line for the Scrappers?

It seems likely and it is disappointing as a Scrappers fan. I hate to think of the economic impact on this community and the families that will be impacted directly and indirectly not only in Mahoning Valley, but also in all the communities that may lose teams.

While it appears there could be some sort of baseball the details are sketchy and it's not likely to be the same quality we have seen with the talented clubs the Scrappers have fielded in recent years.

IF the Scrappers don't play again, I will regret not getting to see a game there.  There are only 2 affiliated ballparks in the state I have failed to see a game in (Toledo 5th 3rd is the other).

I had always planned on driving over for a game but circumstances never worked out.

Yeah I've been to several from SE Tennessee to NW Pennsylvania. Still plenty I'd like to hit, but there will be some I had planned on seeing that I never will now. It is disappointing...

It will be a real shame if the Scrappers are gone.

Nice little ballpark run by friendly people and a Steak n Shake within walking distance of the ballpark.Although they've (Steak n Shake) have gone downhill fast.

I have relatives in Youngstown and I know they'll miss it.I really feel bad for Martyinnewyork.

If you go to Lake County for a game, leave time for a Biaggio's(across the street from the ballpark) pecan roll and a cup of joe after the game.

Hey maven, thanks for thinking of me!  I’m really hoping the NYP teams aren’t eliminated, I’ve had season tickets to Batavia games and get to Auburn at least twice a summer to see the Scrappers.  This season seems lost but I have hopes for the future. What a year for baseball fans.

I suspect the Scrappers will find a new home, possibly in the Frontier League. The NYPL teams in general draw well and have established local followings. There's some geographic fit with other teams in the Frontier league, but also with other contracted teams. They're relatively well positioned as the teams up for contraction go.

From the list of potentially contracted teams last fall (obviously subject to a lot of changes):

Auburn Doubledays
Batavia Muckdogs

Connecticut Tigers
Lowell (CT)Spinners
Mahoning Valley Scrappers
State College (PA) Spikes
Staten Island (NY) Yankees
Vermont Lake Monsters
Williamsport (PA) Crosscutters

Binghampton (NY) Rumble Ponies

West Virginia Power

Hagerstown (MD) Suns

Erie (PA) Seawolves

Those would all make sense in a northeast focused league. Either a NYPL reboot by itself, or they could be split up between the Atlantic League, Empire League and Frontier/CanAm. Mahoning could realistically go to any of these, depending on what the rest of the teams do.

Additionally, the Frontier could probably take on Beloit, Clinton, Lexington and Burlington. Lexington would be something of a stretch.

The teams that are really screwed are the Appy League, Frontier League and the stragglers. Those would be Tri City and Salem from the NWL, Daytona, The Fire Frogs, Lancaster (CA), Chattanooga and Jackson.

@edible14

A reworked Frontier league is the logical place for a lot of these teams to end up,but it isn't the same as going to an affiliated teams game to check up on the minor league hopefuls for your favorite team or other ML teams.

I live a five minute drive away from the Crushers ballpark and and have gone to 4/5 games a season since their inception. The quality of play is pretty bad and there just isn't any kind of buzz about the ballplayers. They definitely suffer from market saturation here, but so do more than half the teams in the league.

For me at least,an independent Frontier league can't replace the ML affiliated NY-Penn league. It's just something to do when the Tribe is on a long road trip and we don't want to drive to Eastlake or Akron from Bay/Westlake on a week night.

For sure it would definitely be a blow. But for the people living out in Niles or around Youngstown, I do hope they get to keep their team.

Alternatively, we do know that the MLB asked teams to submit it's preferred choices on which affiliates to cut/keep. It's very possible the Indians elect to try to keep MV over Lynchburg, but the challenge is how do you make that happen when the NYPL is going away and the other High A leagues are all a poor fit geographically. The only way I could see it happening is if they managed to negotiate the FSL being cut instead, and having some form of the NYPL moved to High A.

Will the Tribe prospects be playing other teams such as nearby Cinci and Detroit or intersquad only?

Good question. It is my understanding the taxi squad will remain behind in LC as a reserve group. Once rosters are paired down others will join them in serve status. Theyll continue to practice and work out but will wait around to be called upon so to speak.
