MLB is now authorized to punish those “who are found to have repeatedly or flagrantly violated the protocols”, including barring violators from competition.  I don't think that Plesac's violation of protocols rises to "repeatedly" or "flagrantly", although it might be debatable that what Plesac did was flagrant.  So, MLB probably doesn't have the authority to suspend Plesac.  But, as you've mentioned, and I noted previously, it wouldn't surprise me if he was optioned to the alternate site and replaced, particularly as he will be unavailable for an unspecified number of days due to quarantine, testing, and possible infection.

As expected, here's the apology:

"I would like to apologize to my teammates, the entire Cleveland organization and all of our fans for my actions Saturday evening. I realize I made a poor choice to leave the hotel, which broke protocols and could have endangered other people," Plesac said in a statement on Sunday night. "I understand that in these times of uncertainty, I need to be more vigilant and responsible and I am determined to earn my teammates' forgiveness and get back to work."

So it could be the best-case scenario...

Option him as punishment. He sits out for the time being and possibly returns when needed. Though I'd argue two weeks and a couple missed starts would be in order. That's assuming he remains healthy.

I give Sandy Alomar props for (1) starting Mike Freeman and (2) replacing Hand in the 10th after he gave up a 1B and BB.  Starting Freeman was unexpected, but resulted in positive results, and I think Francona would have let Hand stay in the game for at least 1 more batter.

Big win!

Mike Freeman.. starting is a pure Tito move.. it's a certainty that Sandy and Tito are collaborating regularly.. Freeman is fast becoming one of the better swiss army knives.. just put him anywhere.. I'd like to see Yu-cheng Chang get a few chances like this as well.. Keeping everyone game level sharp is not an easy task..

What Sandy has shown is a clear indication that he is ML manager material.. His instincts are solid and his in-game decisions are almost always correct.. Sandy just needs a brainiac to do the analytic stuff.. maybe two brainiacs?..

Thoughts?..

It's hard to say for sure this far out, but there's a chance this hurts his future earnings too. He was at 125 days before the season started, and super two cutoffs have been less than 2 years, 125 days before. If he's kept down for 10-13 days, that multiples out 2-3 times and guarantees he won't reach that cutoff. He might not have anyway, but it's worth noting that this might affect him long term as well.

Also I highly agree on Sandy doing a great job. Although I was white-knuckling the 10th yesterday when Ollie Perez was brought in after the rain delay. I know Wittgren, Hand, Maton, and Karinchak were all used. But I was hoping for Cam Hill there. Worked out though, so whatever info they had there worked out.

Clevinger also broke protocol with Plesac. He's now in quarantine, and he was even on the team jet. Clev also lied to the team about it. He's now out for his next start, Plutko to come up in place.

I know the covid IL doesn't have a set amount of days to it. But I am not sure players can be placed on it unless they test positive? Pretty much guarantees Plesac has to be sent down, I think.

I agree with Meisel's take on this - I wonder what Carrasco has to say about all of this.

Clevinger is a veteran arm, and I believe one of the older players on the team. He's a team leader too. It's disappointing. Frankly, I hope he is dealt in the offseason.

Agreed. Tito seems to stick with relievers too long.

Nice results putting Freeman out there. It gives me hope the team will be in good hands when Tito retires.

If Plesac, and particularly Clevinger, don't get on their knees and sincerely ask forgiveness in front of the team, there may be a fracture in team comaraderie that can't be repaired.  The fact that Clevinger got on the plane after seeing how the team dealt with Plesac, thereby knowingly endangering his teammates and team staff, is disturbing.

Highly disappointed in Clev. He risked his teammates and staff members health. Completely childish, unacceptable behavior.

The only reason I can think of to explain the actions of Plesac and Clevinger is that they don't believe that the protocols put in place by MLB and the MLBPA are necessary to protect the players and staff, and the season.

I think my biggest concern is Carrasco, Francona, and some others that could have compromised immune systems.

So, how does this affect the whole team?

Quarantine, multiple tests, ???

Unless either of them tests positive, I don't think there's any team wide quarantining. They're all getting tested most likely pretty frequently. So not much changes for the rest of the team yet.

Hopefully Plesac and Clev test negative.

Yeah, all of this raising unnecessary uncertainty.

It's frustrating an inflential player/pitcher and perceived leader.
