This Day in Indians Minor League History – April 19 – Nick Weglarz homers, drives in three runs against Bowie.
A daily feature of Indians Baseball Insider, Around the Farm, obviously won’t be able to be produced until there are minor league games played. In its place, for the time being, a fun feature we are going to try out is This Day in Indians Minor League History. We will do some research and try to find some interesting or random box scores or information that happened in the Indians minor leagues on this particular day. We will try to make this a daily feature as long as we can find something to post other than just repeating items from the last few years to avoid too much repetitiveness. Hope you enjoy, stay well and hope we can get baseball back soon!
April 19, 2009
Akron Aeros 6, Bowie Baysox 3
The Akron Aeros got off to an 8-2 start in their 2009 Eastern League Championship season.
On this day they defeated Bowie 6-3 with three RBI from Nick Weglarz, including a two home run home run.
Big name prospects at the time 1B Beau Mills and OF Johnny Drennan notched two hits and also got an RBI from catching prospect Carlos Santana.
Starting pitching prospect Charles Lofgren pitched six innings allowing a run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Vinnie Pestano picked up the save pitching a third of an inning.
Weglarz was a starting to become a bigger prospect name among the Indians farm system and reached Double-A for the first time in 2009. He was off to a slow start through the nine games so far and hit his first homer of the year in this one. He only played in 105 games as injury problems had started to plague him, but he still had good numbers that year. His 2010 numbers were even better, but the injuries derailed him from there, unfortunately.
