Every team around Major League Baseball had until 4 PM ET on Sunday, June 28th to set their 60-man roster. The Indians submitted a roster totaling 55 players leaving 5 vacancies for possible additions at a later date. Every club will start the season with a 30-man roster before reducing their rosters to 28. Two weeks later clubs will reduce their rosters to 26 players which they will maintain for the remainder of the season. Below is a breakdown of the Indians 60-man roster:
Logan Allen (acq. SD ‘19)
Delino DeShields Jr.
Alternate site roster: (15)
(Practicing at Classic Park)
Jean Carlos Mejia
Among the Indians most notable roster additions are a variety of high profile prospects including Nolan Jones, Bo Naylor, Tyler Freeman, Ethan Hankins, Daniel Espino, Aaron Bracho, and George Valera. Only Nolan Jones seems likely to be added to the 26-man roster. Recent draft picks such as Tanner Burns, Logan Allen (FIU), and Mason Hickman could receive roster considerations at some point. Though none would be expected to be called up to the active roster.
Spring Training invitees Cam Hill, Beau Taylor, Anthony Gose, Mike Freeman, and Dominic Leone will all complete for a final roster spot. A subsequent 40-man roster move would be required to add one of the group to the active roster. As the roster is currently comprised the club will maintain the flexibility to make additions throughout the season.
Some noteworthy players missing from either roster include outfielder Ka’ai Tom, reliever Jared Robinson, and catcher Kungkuan Giljegiljaw among others. It is worth noting some players may be absent because of travel restrictions in their home countries. Reliever Emmanuel Clase will serve his 80-game suspension making him ineligible for the roster all season. Clase will not count against the Indians 40-man (or 60-man roster).
Overall, it appears the Indians emphasized prospect development with the additions of several high profile prospects. While it is unlikely that players like Bo Naylor, Tyler Freeman, George Valera, Aaron Bracho, Daniel Espino, and Ethan Hankins will be called upon each of the prized prospects will receive needed developmental time. Ultimately, this opportunity should be beneficial for the long term development of each player.
