Quality of Opposition (QoO) numbers per Baseball Reference
ROCKIES PITCHERS (PROJECTIONS PER FanGraphs)
Jon Gray (1st-5th innings): MLB #3 starter
Daniel Bard (6th inning): MLB closer
Yency Almonte (7th inning): MLB middle reliever
Scott Oberg (8th inning): MLB 7th-inning setup man
Carlos Estevez (9th inning): MLB middle reliever
Jake Bauers (1B): 0-3, 1 K – Bauers, the only starter in yesterday’s game not virtually guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day 26-man, didn’t help his case with his second straight hitless game.
Harold Ramirez (RF-LF): 0-1 – Ramirez grounded out to short to lead off the ninth on Friday. He remains hitless outside of a two-hit game on Tuesday.
Ryan Lavarnway (1B): 0-1 – These Spring ATFs have been primarily a prospect-focused feature, but with so few minor league prospects playing in some games at this point in the preseason, some of the focus will shift to minor league veterans. Lavarnway, who has primarily been a catcher in his professional career, is playing mostly at one of his alternate positions this preseason as he has played six of his eight games at first base (left field is the other position he has played during his pro career). He has struggled at the plate except in terms of power. He is only batting .200 (3-for-15), but all three hits are of the extra-base variety (two doubles, one homer). resulting in a .333 ISO. Also of concern is that he had only faced 4.4 (Single-A) pitching on average through Thursday (faced Estevez yesterday).
Beau Taylor (C): 0-1, 1 K – Taylor struck out swinging to end the game. He is, like Ramirez, hitless outside of one game (a double on Wednesday).
The following players appeared only as defensive replacements (or, in one case, also as a pinch runner) and did not make a plate appearance.
Owen Miller (2B)
Will Benson (PR-RF): 1 CS, 1 E
Tyler Krieger (3B): 1 E
Tyler Freeman (SS)
Steven Kwan (RF-LF)
Anthony Gose: 1 IP, perfect – Gose rebounded from his disastrous outing on Wednesday with this perfect sixth against the projected 5-6-7 portion of the Rockies’ major league lineup (C.J. Cron, Sam Hilliard, Josh Fuentes).
Blake Parker: 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R (all earned), 2 BB, 1 WP – Parker has struggled significantly in his last two outings (combined 0.2 IP, 6 H, 11 R (6 earned), 4 BB). This is not a recipe for success, especially for a veteran invitee.
Kyle Nelson: 0.2 IP. 1 H, 1 HBP – Nelson was once again called upon to serve in the mop-up role he has become known for this spring.
