The Dominican Summer League opened up two weeks ago and we covered how team Blue did over the first week. This Saturday, we’ll look at the first two weeks of team Red instead. Things started off strong for team Red as they won their first four games, but the second week wasn’t quite a solid, losing four of five.

Player of the Week
IF Junior Caminero: 8/24, 7 R, 5 RBI, 2 SB, HR, 2B, 6 BB
The 18 year old infielder Caminero had a strong start to the beginning of his professional career with two extra base hits, two steals and more walks (6) than strike outs (4) in his first seven games. He has been best defensively at third where he played three games, but has also played short and first. His best game was his second when he hit a home run, knocked in three, walked twice and stole a base, but he has been fairly consistent throughout, only failing to reach base in the six inning game on July 23rd.
SP Austin Aldeano: 2 GS, 7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
Aldeano made two starts for the Indians over the first two weeks and was the most effective pitcher for team Red. He went three innings in his pro debut on July 15th, allowing one earned run and striking out three, then extended to four innings in his second appearance on July 22nd, allowing one earned and two unearned runs with three more strike outs.
IF Jhoan Gomez: 4/13, 2 R, 3B, 5 RBI, 2 BB
Like Caminero, Gomez has not only been a valuable bat so far in the young season, but has traveled around the infield with games played at first, second and third. His five RBI rank second on the team (tied with many including Caminero) and he’s second in average and OBP to Caminero.
IF Emerson Purroy: 1/20, R, 4 BB, 9 K
Purroy has been another infielder willing to move around, playing good enough (according to the stats) defense at second with single games played at first and one split between short and third. He hasn’t found his way at the plate yet, however, with just one hit over the first two weeks. He’s played as much as anyone, but has easily been the team’s worst offensive performer. Carlos Gutierrez is a close second, but hasn’t quite played as much and has a few more walks.
RHRP Yonaiker Garcia: 4 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 4 HBP
Garcia has made three appearances out of he bullpen so far and each time has given up at least one earned run. He hit two batters in each of his first two appearances, then allowed three hits and a walk in his last on his way to one earned and two unearned runs allowed.
