So, apparently, Nolan Jones, Tyler Freeman, and George Valera are scheduled to be on the taxi squad.  If true, Freeman surprises me a bit, and Valera surprises me a lot.  And the taxi squad will purportedly be training at Classic Park in Eastlake.

Not so much of a surprise if it affords the Tribe to get some organized work/ training for the better prospects in the system.

It would be surprising to see some of them to make MLB debuts, be placed on the 40 man roster and possibly burn one of the 3 option years.

One other aspect to consider - if the Tribe is making a push toward the postseason and is looking to add a player or 2 to the MLB roster, what would another team look to get in return in trade - a player that is currently playing (at some level) or one that has been sitting at home (possibly working out on his own) since late March??

Exactly, gets young guys reps and keeps them developing too. Great point, that development may be for another club if a trade occurs. I expect several prospects on there to get them reps. Others like Hill, Robinson, Gose, etc will be on there too

To put it in perspective, any number of teams could end sitting right around 15-15..

That's the halfway point of the season.

I am really excited to see how this goes. I am sure the players are excited. Extra rest/healing. Universal DH. I am not advocating for permanent changes (though I think the DH rule is here to stay) but in a one-off scenario, I like it. I believe this is the most competitive the entire league has been at the same time in my life.

With the Universal DH, does someone like Bobby Bradley find himself traded to an NL team?

This is after 30ish games in 2019.. Note Washington.

I understand the desire to continue to develop the team's best prospects, regardless of whether they are ready for the majors.  IMO, this has to be balanced by other practical considerations.  Teams don't know as of today what impact the coronavirus will have on the league in general, and the individual teams, in particular.  For every spot given to a top prospect that can't help the Indians in its quest to make the playoffs, one spot is unavailable for a player that could serve as a replacement for a player on the major league roster who becomes infected.  And as I understand it, the taxi squad will be a maximum of 5 players, reduced to 2 players a few weeks into the season.

Good question: I think there is a possibility a team could make that call. With the glut of outfield talent I would not be surprised to see someone moved.

Back to Bradley, with only 1 yr of control of Santana remaining will they swing that type of deal?

It would free at bats up for Jake Bauers if they continue to see him as part of the future. At this point who knows.

My question becomes what does Bradley net in a trade? Not a whole lot. Maybe a near ready pen arm or a very young decent prospect.

A few questions that I have ...

1) Does being placed on taxi squad count as an option? I would assume someone like Bradley or Chang will use an option year this year. And, MLB players would have a grievance if these guys were left off taxi squad just to save an option.

2) I assume nothing was added to avoid the 4/5 year Rule 5 draft timing from accruing as it’s just based on time (years) from signing.

3) Does Clase get one year closer to free agency, even while suspended for entire year? I assume so.

Just going to be interesting as you will have a bunch of minor league kids who are going to be out of options or now eligible for Rule 5 but haven’t played significantly to figure out if they are ready for next year.

Rule 5 - Nolan Jones, Will Benson, Ernie Clement, Kyle Nelson, Raymond Burgess, Carlos Vargas, Eli Morgan, Marcos Gonzalez, Louis Olviedo (again)

At least with players who have 1 option left (Rodriquez, Hoyt, Matón, Allen, Bauers, Chang), no one stands out if we lost them due to not getting a full year of seasoning to be ready next year. Plus, with the extra roster space early, those with 0 options have a bit more time to try to hang on like Wood, Plutko and Arroyo (Plutko is your 26th guy) as rosters go from 30, 28 to 26

I'm wondering whether the new extra-innings rule, which will put a man on 2B to start the inning, could give Bradley Zimmer an opportunity to make the Indians' roster.

Daniel Espino will be on the taxi squad.  MIF Ernie Clement and RHP Cam Hill will be on the 60-man MLB roster.

I'm wondering whether the new extra-innings rule, which will put a man on 2B to start the inning, could give Bradley Zimmer an opportunity to make the Indians' roster.

Zimmer, DeShields, and Greg Allen all fit the profile of a guy you would want for that role. How many make the final 26-man roster is the question.

Another question is how often this will come into play. First of all, how many extra inning games will there be in a 60-game season? I counted 14 extra inning games last year which would equate to about six for a 60-game season.

The rule says the batter who made the last out the previous inning will start on second base. If that batter is Lindor or Ramirez there's no way Tito will use a pinch runner. First, those guys can run. Second, you don't want to take their bat and glove out of the lineup in case it goes an additional couple of innings and they are due to bat again.

Same for Mercado, who has great speed. The guy you would most likely run for would be Perez, but that would take you down to your last catcher. Reyes would also be a prime candidate, especially if he were in right field. It would be a no-brainer to pinch run with Zimmer, Allen, or DeShields. Get the run home and then have a lot more range in right field for the bottom of the inning if you're on the road.

I think there might be only 3-4 games where a pinch runner would be in order in the 10th or 11th. Data from the minors shows games end after 10 innings almost three-fourths of the time, so very few games should go as far as the 12th.

In the end I can't see using a roster spot on a guy who is just a set of wheels if he'll only be used for one inning of 3-4 games. Fortunately, we have a couple of guys in Zimmer and DeShields who are great defensively in addition to having elite speed. However, Zimmer needs to play, so I expect he'll be on the 20-man training squad where he can face live pitching every day in intrasquad games. I expect DeShields to be the primary pinch runner in the 10th or 11th, but in most cases we won't be using a pinch runner.

I have to believe the 20-man squad will include a few guys on the cusp of the majors who can be brought up if there are injuries or illnesses and the team is fighting for a playoff spot. Guys like Jake Bauers, Daniel Johnson, Nolan Jones and Bobby Bradley.

There will also be a group of much younger players who are not close to big league ready but who are considered the top prospects in the org who are too valuable to sit out the season, guys like Hankins, Espino, and Valera.

If I were GM the reserve squad would be a strange mix of about 8 AAAA players as injury reserve and 12 of our top prospects regardless of age or readiness to play in the majors.

The risk would be if there was a big outbreak where about 10 players from the major league roster had to be quarantined for two weeks. They would not want to bring up 19-year-old A or A+ players to face major leaguers. But if that happened there would be little chance of the playoffs so they could just sign a few street free agents or make a couple of minor trades to plug holes as long as necessary. But that would involve releasing someone off the 20-man roster, so that would be a problem.

So do we start guessing the opening day roster/taxi squads?

Pitchers (15 opening/15 taxi)

Starters (6) - Clevinger, Bieber, Cookie, Pleasac, Civale, (Swing - Plutko)

Relievers (9) - Hand, Wittgren, Karinchak, Cimber, Perez,  Rodriquez, Wood, 2 of (Leone, Maton or Hoyt)

Taxi Squad assigned (2)-- Hill, Espino

Depth Starters (4) -- Moss, Allen, McKensie, Scott  (plus with Plutko and Rodriquez, there is plenty of starters or bullpen days you can do)

Depth Relievers (4) -- (Leon, Maton or Hoyt), Gose, Sandlin, (pick one or two -- Nelson, Siri, Dowdy, Broom, Robinson)

Prospects (5) - Hankins, Mejia/Hentges (already on can be called up easily to fill reliever role), maybe ... Oviedo , Vargas (or pick another reliever)

Hitters (15 opening/15 taxi)

Catchers (2/3) -- Perez/Leon  -- Naylor (if you have Espino, Valera, ect) plus 2 of Taylor/Rupp and Giljegilaw

Infield (6/5) -- Santana, Lindor, Hernandez, Ramirez, Freemen, Arroyo

Taxi - Bradley, Chang, Jones, Clement, Freeman

Outfield/DH (7/7)  -- Reyes, Mercado, Naquin (if ready), DeShields, Allen, Luplow, Bauers

Taxi - Zimmer (him or Arroyo), Johnson, Tom, Valera, O Gonzalez?  (may just add a pitcher or two to taxi squad) ....

As Aaron Bracho is on the alternate site list, I'm a little surprised that SS Brayan Rocchio isn't - at least not yet.  It seems to me that RHP Luis Oviedo would also make sense.
